Making The Switch To Green Beauty!

03/20/2018

Welcome back!!

Today I wanted to talk about making the switch to green beauty! Before I dive into the products that I've tried so far, I'll give you all a little background as to why I've decided to slowly switch my beauty products to green beauty.

A few years ago, my skin was the worst it had ever been and I discovered that it was very closely connected to fragranced makeup/skincare. With doing some research, I've found that manufacturer's are not actually required to disclose what is in their "fragrance" mixture, which is really scary because a lot of fragrance mixtures are toxic concoctions that cause all sorts of skin irritations. The awful news is that fragrance is in nearly ALL makeup and skincare. For me, the culprit was this Chanel foundation that I was absolutely obsessed with for years. To this day, I wish I could use it. I realized that every product I had ever used from Chanel was heavily fragranced. Basically for about two years, I was paying almost sixty dollars for this foundation that lead to the zit infestation in my face. Lovely right?

So, before I discovered this fragrance 'allergy' we'll call it, I had occasionally dealt with cystic acne here and there from about nineteen to twenty-two. When I turned twenty-three it seemed like my skin was constantly broken out with little zits and I felt like I couldn't go anywhere without makeup on (this was the year I started using the Chanel foundation). I couldn't understand it at the time, I had tried EVERYTHING and nothing seemed to make it better for the long term. At that point I decided it was time to pursue Accutane treatment. For those of you who don't know what Accutane is, it is a semi-invasive oral pill that is a treatment for severe acne. Basically, when nothing else works - this is the literal last hope for clear skin. I was on Accutane for seven months, most people do a six month course and I was nearly crazy the whole time (lovely side effects!). During this time though, I was doing my research on makeup that was natural - specifically foundation. Through finding Kjaer Weis foundation, I found green beauty at The Detox Market.

In this post, I'm going to introduce you all to a couple of different products that I am JUST starting to use. Literally I opened the package from The Detox Market yesterday and used the products for the first time last night. I am not a green beauty expert but over the next few months I'm going to be exploring product options, and see how much of an impact making an entire switch actually makes. The Detox Market is one of my favorite online stores because they are very selective with which products they carry. This is not a paid advertisement by the way, everything I am saying about them in genuine and my own opinion. They are truly the green beauty experts, offer outstanding customer service and ship very quickly. I can't gush about these guys enough!!

Alright, so product ingredients! Beyond fragrance, there are many ingredients in beauty and makeup products that are actually harmful or could potentially be. For example, in shampoo AND conditioner is an ingredient called Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or SLS. In the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is a "moderate hazard" which has been linked to neurotoxicity, skin irritation, cancer, organ toxicity, and endocrine disruption. Sounds glorious right?? This lovely ingredient is what makes our shampoo foam, and it has a similar chemical makeup that Agent Orange had - you know that horrible herbicide that was used in the Vietnam War?

this article. It was down the rabbit hole after that! Okay, so besides shampoo and conditioner, it is in basically anything that foams - face wash, hand soap, dish soap, you name it! You all are probably like 'how the hell did this girl get on this natural kick' LOL and I actually was looking up shampoos and conditioners one morning hoping to find something with natural fragrance. I occasionally have scalp issues and figured the culprit was the fragrance, which is when I stumbled upon

That article was like a light bulb that had gone off for me. When I started to realize just HOW harmful some of the ingredients are that are in skincare, beauty and hair products it made me want to change my whole regimen. I was truly disturbed reading about how SLS seeps through your skin and into your blood stream, and wondered what other toxic ingredients do that?

With that said - I'll start by introducing you guys to the new products I'm using starting with the

shampoo and conditioner I'm trialing:

Rahua is sold everywhere from The Detox Market, Sephora, Amazon, Barneys, and more.

I ordered the 'Jet Setter' kit, so that I could try both the 'classic' line and their 'voluminous' line.

So far I have only tried the voluminous line and so far so good. I will update you guys as I continue to use it!

Next up, Indie Lee Brightening Cleanser:

This is Indie Lee's bestselling Brightening Cleanser and I'm loving the fact that I now have a cleanser that is free of SLS. Right now, I'm feeling like my skin has been quite dull and dry, likely from the New England winter (which is hopefully nearing an end!!). I was looking for something to give my skin life again, and this one was noted to create luminous skin which is of course life goals! When reading the description, I was also looking forward to the light strawberry scent (natural of course). I just used it, and it smells divine!

Indie LeSqualane Facial Oil:

Okay, so squalane boosts cell regeneration, promotes skin elasticity, retains moisture and improves tone and texture. All of which affect the luminosity of our skin! I am in serious graduation prep mode right now, and I want to just glow as I walk across that stage. I am such a fan of skin oils, and this one is no exception. It just feels so clean as I apply it to my face, and it doesn't have a scent - at least not a noticeable one (to me). It is pure and simple, 100% Squalane Oil, so you know exactly what you're getting. I've started using this one with my dermaroller, which will really help boost collagen. I'll be glowing in no time!! P.S: This oil can be used anywhere on your body.

Odacité Discovery Kit for Tired, Devitalized + Dull Skin:

Okay, so a little over a year ago The Detox Market had given me a sample of an Odacité oil and I was totally impressed. The sample was actually the same size as one of these vials, and it lasted me FOREVER. I was using it only under my eyes and I felt like I looked so much more awake. When I found my way to the brands section on TDM's website, I was blown away with how many different serums they have to treat different concerns. On my pursuit to glow, I decided this kit would be the perfect way for me to try a few of their serums at once. This kit includes their vital glow, hyper-pigmentation, radiance, and dull skin serums. It also includes the brands time release delivery cream, which is used as a method to apply the serums. Basically you mix 2-3 drops of the serum to their lotion and it's a magic potion. When I had originally used the brand, I had no idea about this cream. I am looking forward to seeing the results. Please note, you can also use the serums alone! I'm going to give both ways a whirl!

One Love Organics Brand New Day:

You know, I LOVEEEEE a good scrub. I look forward to it, just the feeling of fresh soft skin with no flaky's anywhere to be found - ugh heaven! I'm sure this powder scrub is going to live up to it's hype. I will have to let you guys know because I have not tried it yet. I ordered the little sample size, but this powder exfoliant will definitely last me a while. I will give this one a try this weekend because I don't like to exfoliate at all for a few days after a good dermarolling session because the skin is working on regenerating collagen.

Alright y'all! That is the summary of my recent Detox Market haul. I am looking forward to seeing the results that these products bring, I will definitely keep you updated on the results. I plan to continue to post about new green beauty products I am going to introduce to my routine, so stay tuned!!
